VARTA is a Ukrainian documentary initiative by the NEUTRINO film team — a series of short films that preserve the memory of the war through the personal stories of soldiers, medics and rescuers. The website is its permanent home: an archive of the films, the people in them, press coverage and the fundraising that keeps the work going.
The Challenge
A war archive carries a duty of care. The material — testimonies, portraits, footage — is sensitive, and the interface had to honour it without ever sensationalising it. It also had to keep growing: new films, new protagonists, new press and awards would arrive for years, so the structure had to hold weight it didn't yet contain.
Scope of Work
- Creative direction and UX/UI design
- Custom WordPress content architecture
- Front-end development and motion
- Documentary archive & protagonist system
- Press, awards and fundraising sections
- Accessible, responsive reading experience
Responsibilities
- Set the editorial tone and information architecture for a sensitive subject
- Designed the hero, film and archive templates as one system
- Built reusable content types so protagonists and films can be added indefinitely
- Implemented the front-end, pacing and restrained motion
- Wired in press, festival recognition and donation flows
The Solution
The site is built as a restrained cinematic archive. Content types for protagonists and films let the team publish new stories without touching layout, while typography, pacing and full-bleed imagery hold an emotionally controlled reading rhythm. Every screen is designed to recede, so the people and their stories lead.
Impact & Results
- 01A dignified, documentary home for sensitive testimony
- 02An archive that scales to new films and protagonists without redesign
- 03A clear path from the films to the people, press and fundraising
- 04Selected and recognised at international documentary festivals
